ABOUT AJ
Great Schools.
Mountain Values.
Welcome friends and neighbors! Thanks for checking out my campaign website!
I am running for the Madison County School Board because I love helping young people develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence to pursue their dreams and be prepared to meet future challenges. Madison County Public Schools (MCPS) has traditionally aimed toward this same goal, but in recent years has faced significant funding losses that threaten its excellent schools and the futures of our young people and county.
Over 34 years in education has taught me that community collaboration is the foundation of building, sustaining, and restoring the health of our schools. As a School Board member, I will be committed to supporting this county’s excellent public schools by collaborating with all stakeholders—parents, teachers, administrators, students, and local employers—to ensure that all perspectives and needs are considered in financial and programmatic decisions affecting our children.
Great education should prepare students to be able to live and work where they were raised or elsewhere if they choose. MCPS currently offers excellent pathways to do this, but as funding for public education continues to decrease each year, it is essential that experienced and knowledgeable educators participate in programmatic and financial decision-making to sustain the well-being of our education system. As a former administrator and teacher in under-resourced public schools, I bring a practical and seasoned perspective to analyzing and addressing the complex economic and social challenges currently faced by our county’s public schools.
I love this community and want to ensure our young people's and county’s futures by sustaining our excellent public schools. If you believe that the Madison County School Board needs members with decades of on-the-ground experience in public education, please elect me to the School Board.

ISSUES
Great Schools
We all want our children to attend great schools even though we may not be able to easily define or agree upon what a great school is. Below is my personal short list of the basic characteristics of a great school. As a School Board member, I am committed to supporting our county’s great schools..
Great schools are…
- Responsive to the individual academic, social, and emotional needs of each student.
- Welcoming and considerate of all school stakeholders' voices.
- Invested in keeping pace with rapid technological and instructional change via continuous teacher training.
- Dedicated to preparing students to live and work locally or beyond.
- Committed to sustaining and innovating successful programs through well-considered funding and programmatic decisions.
Mountain Values
You may wonder what is meant by “mountain values.” Perhaps you already have a definition in mind. I have heard and seen the term “mountain values” in Madison County over the past few years and have often considered its meaning. In the end, I chose to use this term to capture the qualities my husband and I found so attractive that we decided to move here.
Mountain Values are comprised of…
- Wisdom and traditions passed down from one generation to the next.
- Being a good neighbor and helping those in need.
- Living by faith.
- Respect for others.
- Love and respect for the natural beauty of this area.
As a neighbor, I do not want to see this community lose the values which drew me here. As a long-time educator, I know how important understanding local values is to providing meaningful school experiences for students. I strongly believe that the best way to preserve the mountain values and traditions of this community is through an education that equips our young people with the skills and knowledge needed to live and work where they were raised. MCPS already does this, and I am committed to helping protect and sustain our county by supporting our public schools.
